TomTom use (and now own) TeleAtlas mapping whilst Garmin use NavTeq - different mapping from different companies. Whatever you use it's best to ensure your maps are up to date. Updates are often free within the first year.

With Garmin products you can usually update your firmware and mapping here:

With my StreetPilot C330 I was also allowed to download and install their MapSource software. With this I can view the same mapping and routing on my PC and also transfer information to and from the unit.
