That is a bit tight for XP and even for Ubuntu (don't slap me Zing!) - however on older hardware and especially with basic usage like that you might want to consider Ubuntu - it will be faster, more reliable and much more secure in novice hands than XP. Oh and there are chat clients for Ubuntu that work with MSN.
