Just a rider to my comments above:

Having put the 'extra' link in (STB to TV ext 2), I DID find a very useful function for it. Before, I could record from (built-in) freeview on the DVD, and watch another previously recorded programme on the DVD. But WITH the ext 2 link, I can record the freeview programme onto DVD and ALSO watch a live cable TV programme at the same time by switching to Ext 2 on the television.

PS And you're quite right, not reading the manual is DEFINITELY a man thing. Thought I was cured, but obviously not....
