I have a NTL cable modem upstairs connected by Ethernet to a NetGear WGR614 v6 cable router, connected by ethernet to a desktop machine. My laptop connects quite happily to this and I get the full 4Mb bandwidth.

I bought the NetGear from eBay for about Ã‚Â£25.
