Your right about VM support - they won't help you with routers.

Odd that you needed the mac of your laptop to be set into the cable modem, I thought that was recorded only for Set Top Box users.

You are fully powering the modem off before you change over the connected device - laptop to router?

I'd suggest you do a factory reset on the router, get it all back to it's default settings. Then you should be able to proceed normally.
