AFAIK most routers will have similar (legal max) transmit power, so your best bet is to look for a receiver with a good sensitivity, and/or get an external antenna.

Moving the router to a higher and more central place in the house may also help.

I've also had some problems with Belkin cards but got it going in the end, the later drivers help a lot.
