The main points are that it uses 10/100 lan cards so is more than capable of handling anything that Virgin throws at it for now.

Any old pc will do from a 386 to a pent 4. When it is up and running no keyboard , mouse, monitor are needed.

it would be nice if i could also find a ready made liveCD with NAS and 2x1Gigabit basic bonding included.

if he's going to buy any non cheap commercial router today its probably better to get a 1Gig router anyway to allow growth later.
