Rubbish service-Stockport

I have noted for the past week or so that t'internet service in my home has been absolutely rubbish. Slow speeds,lost connections,error 404's. What is going on? There is little point in phoning customer services as the chances are that all i will get is someone following a standard script/flow chart which will end up blaming my pc/myrouter/my anti-virus software- in fact anything but NTL network.
