in my experience the BT ADSL usernames tend to follow the format of
Ao28rkueo@hg13.btconnect.com with a suitably random password, so yes, you would need to get the username and password details from them
Modulation is usually VC-MUX etc etc etc...
Someone is just trying to fob you off
