I'm fairly confident that the OP did

I'd suspect that the number of wireless AP's in the vicinity would be the most likely cause of the problem.

Not sure there is much that you can do about it if you cannot find a free channel, maybe look at homeplug or running in cat5 if the machines you want to connect are desktops (theres nothing to stop you using it with a laptop its just it wouldn't be as portable as wi-fi)
