Component can be used for anything up to 1080p for games, 1080i for HD DVDs, & normal SD Progressive Scan for DVDs.

VGA can be used for anything up to 1080p for both games and HD DVDs, and lets the 360 upscale DVDs up to 1080p.

Some 1080p TVs will only take 1080p over HDMI. So if you have one of those, then you need HDMI for 1080p.

If you have a 720p or 1080i TV, then it doesn't really matter.

HDMI is also necessary for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. But, if you don't have an amp/receiver capable of those anyway, then it's again a bit pointless.

The original 360 will not be getting an HDMI cable..... its video output is analogue only apparently. The Elite has an actual separate HDMI output, next to the normal proprietary AV output.

Yes the ANA scaler chip in the original 360 does not handle digital. Microsoft have designed a new digital capable scaler for the Elite.

EDIT: But I suppose at least it's got a hardware scaler (sorry couldn't resist)
