and 8Mb Zen ADSL Pro (20:1 contention)

for this I use Zen (the best ADSL ISP I have found) the cost of this is £34 (not a lot cheaper than VM)

if VM would do fixed IPs I would scrap the ADSL without a thought
I am using a LINUX router that keeps detailed logs so I can be quite certain of these figures
BTW I live approx 1.6 KM from the exchange
another point.. because (it seems) there is less packet fragmentation and latency in the VM network VOIP also works considerably better!

After you mentioned VOIP another thing came to my mind, for all ipstream isps that do not use central plus (most of them) all traffic has to go through london, so if I ping my next door neighbour even if he was on the same isp as me I am looking at about 45-50ms. (22-25ms to london). Cable network routes much more efficiently within the uk, the central plus system is different since the isps use BTs wholesale peering rather then their own network allowing them to utilise a uk wide backbone. LLU providers I would think are also limited routing but may be improved over ipstream. The only isps with national backbones I can think of are energis, ntl/telewest, BT and janet.

This is a pathetic and they know it aswell, they even admitided to me on a phone call. I am contracted for 3 more months. It is so frustrating, if they are traffic shaping it dosnt work. They need to Cut everyone on my UBR to 4mb and pay for that loss until it is upgraded.
It is absoloutley rubbish and i could never reccomend anyone to to get Cable in my area until they have upgraded.

If 10mbit users were throttled down to 4mbit shouldnt 4mbit users and the bottom tier also lose 60% of speed?
