No, the extra memory is used for the firmware, so the more memory available, the larger the firmware can be and therefore the more features it can offer.
The disadvantage of the GL over the GS is that it doesn't natively include the Speedbooster functionality. However, with the GL version, you can include a 3rd party firmware such as dd-wrt, and this has an equivalent of SpeedBooster, called Afterburner.
