you will not have to take your pc downstairs at all. Simply plug in the router and configure the wireless bit on your pc. Follow the instructions and go to 192.168.1.1 or the address mentioned in the instructions and you will be able to set everything up from there.

I've had linksys, belkin , dlink and netgear routers and the linksys one worked the best so you are choosing the best.
