Nobody took over your contract. NTL took over TW and then NTL plc changed their name to VM plc (or whatever) your contract is still with the same entity. In any case there is a contract novation clause that would allow them to move the contract.
You can fight them on the existing contract, it is still valid just because the company name changes does not change anything.
Cable is Cable, there is only one cable company in the UK now, that is Virgin.
