I bought a new DVD/HDD recorder for use with NTL recently - my research suggested that the Panasonic DMREX75 was one of the best for under Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â£300. (Was Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â£280 on EmpireDirect - now Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â£370).
Works a treat with either freeview or NTL input ( and does record off RGB Scart, which some of the cheaper Sony's don't). Even has an HDMI port with upscaler - not that I have HDTV yet - SD card reader and records to DVD-RAM!
