i pretty much do the same i.e run an ariel straight to the tv as it has built in freeview and the v+ connected via hdmi and i use a scart from the v+ tv out to my dvd recorder as i get a better picture this way if i ever want to keep something i recorded.
however the scart out doesnt work together with the hdmi so a quick change in the settings on the v+ is all it takes.
as for switching the box off over night there shouldnt be a problem as i have done this as well when i remember!
