the reason you wouldnt be able to do it online is due to DPA, its much harder to confirm that the person says they are over the internet, over the phone they can ask questions which only the account holder should know, and if its done by letter they have the signature should the real account holder come back and claim they didnt ask for the account to be disconnected

But a lot of people
are lazy, I'm sure you will agree. Writing a letter may involve them having to go out to the shops to buy paper, envelopes and a stamp. Then they have to write the letter and then go post it. They don't want that, they just want to be able to phone up and cancel whatever it is.
