Try:
Start menu
Run
type: cmd
press enter
type: ipconfig /all
press enter
You should see a "physical address" for your LAN connection which is the MAC address assigned to your PC ethernet connection.
Try entering that into the router and then reset the router and modem after applying the setting. (power modem up first and then the router)

Don't know what happened, but didn't need to do that in the end... left it for a while as I was getting mightily fed up with it. Decided to have another bash at it, switched it all on and hey presto the amber connection light turned green
