Sorted it.

The svchost.exe problems were being caused by one of the programs that gets installed with BT Home hub. Uninstalling them all sorted that.

I also uninstalled the soundcard drivers from within control panel but it hung whilst doing it.

When I rebooted the card was working properly and didn't seem to reinstall.

Did a full virus and spyware scan as well as a defrag.

Everything works great now.
