If there is no cooling compound between the CPU and it's heatsink/cooling fan, you really do risk doing something nasty to your CPU.
A cooling fan that is not spinning up correctly / not plugged din / not correctly detected by the motherboard can be enough to shut down the PC, as will the CPU (or indeed other motherboard related components) reaching it's maximum temperature limits (as set by the BIOS). Some of the temperatures can be tweaked in the BIOs, or by other manufacturer's utilities, but you need to know what the safe limits are.
