what screen size are those btw, and at what bitrate (2 pass encode i assume?) when i said 'you can reduce it to below 500mbit/s' that was ment to say 500kbits/s 400kbit/s work ok too on some stuff and even AVC 290kbit for really good web streaming.

did you try that AVC mencoder264 on clean mpeg2.ts 3 minute test cases yet to compare?.
