I'm not by a long way saying Modems make all the difference, swapping mine seems to have cured the problem for me.
I totally agree about the Indian call centre. I have on many occasions in the last few weeks hung up on them. I also had the colour of my Ethernet cable questioned, mine is a nice yellow 1. "Please change it back to the blue 1 supplied by NTL and call back when you have done that." I Don't imagine they call it bovine pooh, but........................
