By saying the core of your team is over the hill i take it you mean Van der Sar, Neville, Giggs and Scholes as these are the first team players over 30.
Van der Sar has conceded the fewest goals in the premiership so far and is first choice Dutch goalkeeper and captain. Neville is part of the strongest defence in the premiership, club captain and first choice England right back. Giggs is playing the best football of his career and is captain of Wales. Scholes is being constantly begged by England to come out of retirement and is being named as one of the players of the season by most pundits.
I fail to see how they are 'over the hill' as it seems that they are playing some of the best football of their careers and still performing at the top level. You have to face the facts United are top by eight points (probably five come Wednesday) have conceded fewest goals and have scored the most. I seriously doubt its luck 17 games into the season.
