technically the PSTN used to be used to refer to the "BT" network. What I guess you mean is are they "POTS" (Plain Old/Post Office Telephone System), which they are. The new technology that replaces this is VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
Don't expect support staff to know this sort of thing, although I'm sure some do
