Do you think that means I have to pay for the remaining 4 months, or do I have to pay for the next 30 days of the cancellation period?

You always have to give 30 days notice to cancel, but seeing your still in contract you will have to pay the remainder of the 12 months unless you manage to wriggle out of it.
