MSN virus scanning

Hi guys - just noticed that Windows Live Messenger has the facility to scan incoming files either by downloading Windows Live Safety Scanner or, if I am correct, alternative virus software. I have Avast (free version) on my PC but have not tweaked it in any way since I downloaded it and am not sure exactly how much it already covers so I have 3 questions:

Is Avast already doing this job?

Is Windows Live Safety Scanner any good and if it is and I download it will it conflict with Avast?

Can I use Avast to do this job and, if so, how do I tell it to scan msn files?

Any advice most gratefully received as always!!

Cheers.
