Heh where would be if you went through what I just did.

I tried to upgrade dapper to edgy online whilst using the OS and it bombed out half way through.

I continued with a package rebuild and tried to continue as best as i could but it refused to do X for me....

At that point I risked doing a reboot : mistake got nothing just a blank screen

: Opened up a shell and rsynced a backup from the network : reboot and all is good except I notice the network doesnt start automatically i need to do ifdown and ifup.

Thats why I want to get into single user mode so that I can rsync the machine up properly....

ne way I'm gonna go for an upgrade via the cd now We'll see how that goes

OK I worked it out : I used an alternative ubuntu cd to boot me into the hd single user mode...

from there I just rsynced the machine and sweet everything is cool
