Does the router have a make and model?
Unless it's a 'cable/DSL router' it won't work.
Also you need to power cycle the modem, but by the sounds of your problem it prob isn't a cable router. (If it is it would have a 'WAN' or 'Internet' port separate from the four internal ports).
