Why don't you go with a nice Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, it's cooler, faster and better than the FX-62 (AM2).

Unless you don't wanna a new mobo and memory and just an upgrade of the CPU then the X2 4800 is cool but AMD will not support it in 2007.

If you play games then stick with a single core processor as games do not use both cores and in fact are slower than single cores.

You won't need thermal compound if you buy a retail version as the heatsink that comes with the processor will have a thermal pad at the bottom. Just remember to remove the see through thing attached to it.
