Re: Norton Internet Security 2007

Norton is a suite, it attempts to give you protection for many areas of the PC. That is firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, email scanning, real-time protection.

If you choose to go down the pay-for route Kaspersky is an excellent choice:
http://www.kaspersky.com/

However all the protection I use is free, although I have donated to some of the projects, here is a list of free programs for you to choose from. You will need 1 anti-virus program, 1 firewall, as many anti-spyware as you wish.

Anti-Virus Programs

AVG Free (has a Linux version) http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Avast Home Edition http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic (has Linux/FreeBSD/Solaris version and Windows version) http://www.free-av.com/

BitDefender (linux and windows free versions) http://www.bitdefender.com/site/Prod...1/Desktop.html

Comodo (windows only) http://www.antivirus.comodo.com/

ClamWin (has no resident shield, used as a double check for resident AVWindows only) http://www.clamwin.com/

ClamAV (Clam AntiVirus is a GPL anti-virus toolkit for UNIX.) http://www.clamav.net/

Anti-Malware Programs (spyware, trojans etc)(Windows only)
A-squared free http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

AVG Anti-spyware (full version 30 days, then you loose resident shield, and automatic updates. Still effective as you can download manually, and uses same malware signatures)
http://www.ewido.net/en/ (used to be Ewido)
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Spybot Search & Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/

Adaware SE Personal http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

WindowsFirewalls
Zonealarm Basic http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conten...ku_list_za.jsp

Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall (full version trial, then basic version for free) http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm

Outpost firewall Pro (full version then free see http://www.agnitum.com/support/kb/ar...000126&lang=en)
http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/download.php

Jetico Pesonal Firewall (free) http://www.jetico.com/
For your needs I would choose the following because they are easy to setup:
Firewall - Kerio or Zonealarm
Anti-virus - AVG or Avast or Anti-vir (no email scanner)
Anti-spyware - AVG anti-spyware, spybot S & D, adwareSE personnal

you might also consider Winpatrol:
http://www.winpatrol.com/
Quote:
WinPatrol uses a heuristic approach to detecting attacks and violations of your computing environment. Traditional security programs scan your hard drive searching for previously identified threats. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You'll be removing dangerous new programs while others download new reference files.
Hope that helps you out
