Its a home network which has

2 PC's hard wired
1 laptop wireless
1 PDA wireless

none of which are permenantly on

Im now looking at mediaplayers like these (see below) which for not much more would allow me to stream through my home cinema without putting stuff onto CD or DVD

hmmm decisions decisions. I might try the trump card of "I want a new PC Mr Evesham, give me a media player for free and ill pay cash up front"
