A better idea would be to coil up the excess lead and stow it under the desk where the modem is (tape it to the underside), that way if at some time in the future you decide to move your room around then the lead is available to allow you to do so.

I see what you're saying, and it's a valid point. However in our case it would be highly unlikely for the modem ever to need moving (small flat, the position is already next to one of the very few electrical sockets, and will be linked directly to a wireless router making the actual position a bit irrelevant).
