Have you powered the STB off for a few minutes, removed wiped with a clean dry cloth and replaced the card (if any), and powered on again? If so call ntl, but just say it's playing up, not that it's your kid's fault.
And tell you kids it's no telly again for them for a month for punishment (I'm harsh like that
