Thanks for that reply. Hmm, there were a number of SAMBA things listed, some already installed, however, I selected them all for now(!) and they seem to have installed. Trouble is I then can't get to step 2 applications/configurations/kde - Ubuntu is a gnome based set-up. I did a search for SAMBA and found folders and even a config file.
I think I need to take a step back on this, please, what is the equivalent of Control panel? Also what is the equivalent of an .exe file - I only know Windows, so I need a bit of hand-holding here

is there a Ubuntu expert that can show me how to go the way you have both suggested please?. Gretaful for both your help, but as I say, I only know Windows and this is alien to me
Everyone says how easy/much better Linux is to Windows, however when you know nothing I don'tfind it so
