If I'm reading your diagram right you are connecting the wires wrong.

The Modem ethernet needs to be connected to the router internet port.
The Laptop ethernet needs to be connected to one of the four router ehternet ports.

Remember to power off the modem / router / laptop when swapping over the wires.
