Extending broadband areas

With Towny moving to the wilds of Scotland I was looking for ways that he could get a faster than dialup connection at his new home. This got me thinking.

One thing that caught my eye was http://www.villageinternet.co.uk/compare.php which provides broadband connections to remote areas using a combination of wireless technology linked either by satellite or leased line. Could NTL use similar methods to extend their broadband coverage areas either linking in to their existing home infrastructure or using NTL Broadcast infrastructure?
