Following up from Matt's message, it's possible to get spammed even if you haven't *ever* used the address by being victim to a "dictionary attack"

ie if your address is john.smith@ntlworld then the spammer just spams *.smith@ntlworld

If you get the name put in as johnlsmith (or whatever your middle initial is) then it's much less vulnerable to this sort of thing.
