The firewall will prevent people connecting to services on your machine but I don't know whether it prevents pings, unless it has a stealth mode (which seems a little advanced for the built-in XP firewall). I'm no expert on the XP firewall anyway, so I'll leave others to advise. All I can say is that the fact you access web pages via a proxy does not protect you from being pinged. It doesn't even necessarily prevent websites from 'seeing' your own computer's genuine IP address instead of just the Proxy IP.
