I phoned 0800 052 2000 to enquire about downgrading my account to the 1p a minute tarriff, as this sounds like its going to be easier than cancelling?
They insisted they cannot help and I must all ntlfreeoms 0870 number which is surprise surprise only open Mon-Fri 9-5

Anyone got any tips on how to go about downgrading? Or any ntl staff roaming these boards willing to do a favour!
