My card is nicely browned at the chip end, but then it has been cooking for the best part of three years now.
If yours has completely blackened, especially if it has gone that way quite quickly, do as Paul suggests and check the ventilation around the STB, then as OB says, if that's not a problem, tell CS and they should send out a new one.
