Right, just got off the phone with NTL and the guy on the other end acknowledged a problem! So far so good! He gave me an IP of a Cardiff proxy to try in IE6, which let me upload to my Yahoo briefcase, albeit extremely slowly!

He said he'd make a report and get their techies to look at it and would e-mail me a progress report. He also suggested turning the modem off overnight to pick up a new IP address and see if that cures the problem.

When I'd put the phone down I deleted the file from my briefcase and tried uploading it again, it didn't work! And has not worked since. So are they port blocking? Guess I'll have to wait till tomorrow and see if the IP changes now!
