AFAIK, the volume was lowered because certain users were having problems with distorted sound through home cinema setups on the Pace boxes. This was caused by the box outputting too high a volume.
One thing that might be worth checking in you amp manual. Does the Amp allow you to set different volume levels for each function (It may be called Volume Offset). I am not sure if any Home Cinema amps offer it.
I know that my Sony TV offers different volumes for different channels/inputs (but then that also offers independant volume levels for Headphone and Speakers, which is something most Amps I know of don't).
