there is a known intermittent issue with smtp server ...as per the server status page

ntl internet customers may currently experience intermittent difficulty sending emails from their ntlworld addresses and may see error messages such as "error 452 - File system error" when trying to do so.

Our engineers are aware of this issue, and are working to resolve it.
