Solution for Mac Users
Mac OS X has its own smtp server built-in, but it is turned off by default.
Users on version 10.2 ("Jaguar") or earlier need to download a utility called Sendmail Enabler; users on 10.3 ("Panther") need Postfix Enabler.
Once you've set-up Sendmail or Postfix and enabled it you can send mail directly from your own machine to the recipient without going via NTL's mail servers. It takes about 2 minutes to do the download, config and set-up, so it's well worth the effort.
