An update on the Outlook Express problem - after leaving my modem switched off all night, when I connected this morning the problem was gone.
Whether it was anything to do with the settings on my work side being changed in any way (but IT deny this) or whether it was a result of having left the modem off for a longer period of time, who knows? Many thanks to all who offered assistance - here's to hoping it doesn't happen again any time soon
