It was done "tongue in cheek". I think that smilie is cute and that they (smilies) help to make the forum more fun, which is the reason I use them.
As for the legendary "masses" - in refuting the blanket assumption of their requirements, I intended to give another point of view, not repeat the assumption of being their spokesperson. Installation costs and start-up deals will certainly be important to some although, as long as they are reasonable, the long-term costs concern me more. I would think, however, that those who have transferred from dial-up are interested in a little more than "a bit of general browsing and email".
Whatever - chacun a son gout, and apologies where required.
Afterthought:- surely a smilie would not be included in the list if it's use was deemed unacceptable?
