In simple terms, when you phone for an upgrade NTL send a new file to the server which depicts the class of service for the Modem i.e. 150k/600k/1 meg etc.

By rebooting the Modem it usually forces the Modem to receive the new file hence then the new file has the service upgrade.

I am sure someone will soon pop along with a more technical answer.
