If enough customers cancel or downgrade it WILL make a difference to NTL. There will come a time when new customer starts will drop off dramatically unless NTL wake up to the fact that they are becoming more and more uncompetitive.

Don't forget that customers who cancel or downgrade have already had their service installed and that their monthly contribution to NTLs coffers are much more profitable than those of new customers until the point at which the profit from the new customer has paid for the installation costs of their service.

If loss of customers was no big deal, why do NTL have customer retention departments?
