Voter apathy must help them, I think (less turnout for mainstream candidates, easier for fringe scummers to get seats). Plus they also probably benefit in some areas where there are not candidates from all the mainstream parties (e.g. I remember reading recently that at the last local elections, there were some wards that had no Tory candidates at all, & the BNP votes increased, because some natural Tory voters voted BNP instead because of "asylum" & so on...)
I'm not sure if it's as much voter apathy, that the apathy and total lack of understanding shown by the mainstream parties. Okay, I know the government has been tinkering with the asylum system, but that's all it is. I can't remember any party asking why THIS country is such a lure over and above other EU countries such as France, Germany etc. And if they don't ask the question, how are they ever going to find a proper solution?

Again on the Tony Martin point. I can't remember a mainstream political party really getting to grips with how vunerable some householders feel. The situation of these exclusion orders (or whatever they are called) given to unruly kids and teenagers. These thing don't do much. They stop one person, but do nothing about the gangs of youths etc. hanging about on the street corner every night, frightening pensioners.

The hot topic for the mainstream parties seems to be the European Constitution, and protectiong the Houses of Parliament against terrorists. If you ask a pensioner who keeps getting his windows smashed, what's the top of their list, it wouldn't be these two topics.

I say to the main parties - WAKE UP, OPEN YOUR EYES, LOOK WHAT IS HAPPENING, AND LISTEN TO US!!!!!
